Dr. Srinivas Peeta

Dr. Srinivas Peeta is Frederick R. Dickerson Chair in Transportation Systems in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Georgia Tech in August 2018 after 24 years at Purdue University. Dr. Peeta is jointly appointed to the Industrial and Systems Engineering department and as Principal Researcher at Georgia Tech Research Institute. Dr. Peeta leads the Autonomous and Connected Transportation Lab in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering where he conducts state of the art research in the fields of autonomous transportation, connected transportation, and sustainable mobility. Dr. Peeta has been the director of the NEXTRANS Center, which served as the USDOT's Region 5 Regional University Transportation Center (UTC) from 2007 to 2018. He is also the Associate Director of the USDOT Center for Connected and Automated Transportation, the USDOT Region 5 UTCc (2016-2022) led by the University of Michigan. He received his B. Tech., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering from  the Indian Institute of Technology (Madras), California Institute of Technology (Caltech), and the University of Texas at Austin, respectively. 

Dr. Omar Asensio

Dr. Omar I. Asensio is an Assistant Professor in the School of Public Policy at the Georgia Institute of Technology. His research focuses on the intersection of big data and public policy, with applications to energy systems and consumer behavior, smart cities, and machine learning in transportation and electric mobility. He directs the Data Science and Policy Lab at Georgia Tech, where he collaborates with the private sector and city governments on data innovations in policy analysis and research evaluation. He is a faculty affiliate at the Institute for Data Engineering and Science (IDEaS), the Machine Learning Center, and the Strategic Energy Institute. Dr. Asensio’s research has been published in leading journals such as Nature Energy, Nature Sustainability, and PNAS. His work uses statistical and computational tools to advance our understanding of how large-scale civic data and experiments can be used to increase participation in civic processes, while addressing resource conservation and environmental sustainability. Dr. Asensio’s research also has been featured in policy advisory communications by the European Commission, NSF Public Affairs, the World Bank, and national governments — including the U.K., and the IndiaAI initiative.

This team focuses on building the TranSACT mobile app that is used to collect data from the residents and provide real time behavioral change solutions. The team consists of undergraduate and graduate students who contribute through Georgia Tech's Vertically Integrated Projects Course.
